Surjit Singh Sagar: A Life Dedicated to Music
Mr. Surjit Singh Sagar is a highly respected figure in the British Asian music community, known for his deep expertise in Indian Classical Music. Currently residing in Dagenham, his life’s work has bridged the gap between traditional Gurbani Kirtan and contemporary music.
Professional Background & Qualifications
Academic Excellence: He holds a Sangeet Visharad degree (equivalent to a degree in music) specifically in Tabla and Classical Singing. This qualification is a testament to his rigorous training and mastery of complex rhythmic and melodic structures.
Guidance and Mentorship: He is perhaps most publicly recognized as the primary mentor and teacher to his daughter, the award-winning British Asian singer Roma Sagar. Under his guidance, she began performing at the age of 11 and has gone on to achieve global chart success.
Preserving Heritage: In 2012, he was instrumental in the production of the Shabad CD titled ‘Gurbani da Sagar’, dedicated to the memory of his parents. This project was a significant cultural contribution, distributed by the major Indian music label T-Series.
